A day in a life of a pet & stable sitter
A Day in the Life of a Pet & Farm Sitter: Behind the Scenes of Quality Care
Ever wondered what it’s really like to be a pet and farm sitter? While it may look like a day filled with cuddles and fresh air (and yes—there’s plenty of that!), it’s also a job that requires dedication, organization, and a true passion for animal care. At Paws and Hooves Care Services, every day is different but here is a glimpse into what a typical day might look like.
🌅 Early Morning: Rise & Feed
The day often starts early especially when farm animals are involved. Morning visits include:
Feeding horses, dogs, cats, and other animals
Refreshing water buckets and checking automatic waterers
Administering medications if needed
Turning horses out to pasture or paddocks
This is also when we do a full visual health check making sure every animal looks bright, alert, and comfortable.
🐴 Mid-Morning: Barn Duties & Turnout Checks
Once everyone is fed, it is time to focus on barn and property care.
Tasks may include:
Mucking stalls and refreshing bedding
Refilling hay nets and grain bins
Checking fencing and gates for safety
Monitoring pasture conditions
Attention to detail is key small issues can quickly become big problems if missed.
🐾 Late Morning: Pet Visits & Walks
After farm chores, the focus often shifts to household pets.
This part of the day might involve:
Dog walks and exercise
Cleaning litter boxes or cages
Playtime and enrichment activities
Providing companionship and reassurance
For pets who experience anxiety, these visits are especially important they provide routine and comfort while their owners are away.
☀️ Afternoon: Check-Ins & Flex Time
Afternoons can vary depending on client needs.
Some days include:
Additional drop-in visits
Bringing horses in from turnout
Grooming or light exercise
Quick property checks for security and safety
It’s also time to send updates to clients photos, messages, and reports that give peace of mind.
🌇 Evening: Dinner & Settling In
As the day winds down, evening care begins.
Evening routines typically include:
Feeding dinner to all animals
Topping up water and hay
Bringing horses into stalls if needed
Final health and safety checks
This is when animals settle in for the night, so ensuring everything is calm and comfortable is essential.
🌙 Overnight Care (When Needed)
For overnight stays, the job doesn’t end in the evening.
Overnight care includes:
Maintaining the pet’s regular routine
Providing companionship and supervision
Responding to any issues during the night
This is especially beneficial for pets who thrive on consistency and don’t do well when left alone.
❤️ More Than Just a Job
Being a pet and stable sitter is about much more than completing tasks. It’s about building trust with both animals and their owners. Every visit is an opportunity to ensure animals feel safe, loved, and cared for in their familiar environment.
From muddy boots in the barn to quiet moments with a purring cat, this work is as rewarding as it is important.
